Luang Prabang 2017 - Wat Mai Suwannaphumaham
Another beautiful temple in Luang Prabang is Wat Mai Suwannaphumaham – a name that certainly doesn't roll off the tongue easily. Luckily it is more commonly
known as Wat Mai. It is located just next to the Royal Palace complex and you
will not miss it as you walk along the main road.
The temple was founded around 1780 by King Anurat of the
Luang Prabang Kingdom. Its five-tier cascading roof structure is very elegant
and the red-coloured tile gives it a striking presence.
Another striking feature are the gold-gilded decoration on the
columns and walls. They depict scenes from the Ramayana and Jatakas, as well as
everyday life in Luang Prabang in those days.
