Malacca 2011 - Ruins of Fort A Famosa and St Paul Church
The ruins of Fort A Famosa - built by the Portuguese in the 15th Century, is among the oldest surviving European architectural remains in Asia. Today a small gatehouse – Porta de Santiago is the only part of the fortress still standing. Even though in a ruinous state - you can still see the distinctive architectural style and some of the building details.
Visiting this historical site can be underwhelming due to the small size of the remaining structure, so I would recommend that you also trek up to the ruins of St. Paul Church behind the gate. A small trek up the hillside will bring you to the church compound which reminded me a lot of the ruins of St Paul in Macau. It was also located on a strategic hill from which you can have a nice view of the island.
View of Malacca town from the hill.
