Malacca 2011 - Antique Hunting in Malacca

Being such a colourful heritage town with a varied history, Malacca is an antique hunter’paradise. The different periods of Colonial rule – including Portuguese, Dutch and British have resulted in a treasure trove of artifacts reflecting different blends of cultures and traditions. Chinese porcelain, old brass beds, wooden furniture, coins, old currencies, household utensils, etc. are all available for the picking. However, if you are serious about making a purchase and spending serious money – it is best to bring along an expert or someone who knows a bit about antiques. There are unscrupulous merchants trying to pass off replicas as the genuine stuff and take you for a ride.

The most popular destinations for antique hunters would be Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock (Heeren Street) and Jalan Hang Jebat (Jonker Street). The shophouses here are some of the oldest in Malacca, and there are several antique shops here which have gained reputation as reliable sources for antique lovers. Prices are no longer cheap, but there are some really beautiful treasures to be had at the right price.
