Malacca 2011 - Cheng Hoon Teng Temple

Cheng Hoon Teng Temple is a famous Taoist temple in Malacca located on Jalan Hang Lekiu near Jonker Walk. It is reputedly the oldest functioning Chinese Temple in Malaysia – built in the 16th Century. This temple was the main place of worship for the local Hokkien community.

The temple complex is quite big, covering an area of slightly over an acre. The main prayer hall is dedicated to the Goddess of Mercy – Kuan Yin. Opposite the prayer hall – across the road, is a traditional opera theatre. During special Taoist occasions, opera shows will be staged there to please the gods.

The intricate detail of temple decorations are always a marvel to look at.

The temple complex has been completely restored recently and looks magnificent. A visit is highly recommended.
