Malacca 2011 - Jonker Walk

The area around Jalan Hang Jebat, Jonker Steet and Chinatown has collectively become "Jonker Walk", one of the biggest tourist attractions in Malacca. Jalan Hang Jebat and Jonker Street house some of the oldest shophouses in Malacca.

This is still a living and breathing community – locals still live here and carry on with their daily lives. Many of the shophouses of course have been converted into boutique hotels, cafes, restaurants, antique shops, etc. The old ambiance and character is still in place, and this is a great area to wonder around and discover the interesting nooks and crannies.

Around Jalan Hang Jebat and Jonker Street.

One convenient way to explore the streets is by taking the trishaw.

On the weekends (Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays) the streets are closed for motor vehicles from 6:00 pm to midnight. The streets then become a “Pasar Malam” or night market with vendors selling all kinds of stuff from t-shirts, tourist trinkets, jewellery to even antiques.

If you are lucky, you may come across this Chinese Kung Fu master who sells his special Kung Fu ointment - said to relieve all sorts of muscle pains. He can break a coconut with his finger !
