Adelaide 2010 - Adelaide City
Adelaide is the 5th largest city in Australia, with a population of around 1.3 million. It reminds me of Melbourne about 20 years back - quiet, laid back and very comfortable with itself. Nowadays the pace in Melbourne has picked up considerably, especially after the opening of Crown Casino - but Adelaide is still as laid back as ever. On a weekend the city is almost deserted, most Adelaideans choose to spend their time in the suburbs or country side. The weather in Adelaide is milder compared to Melbourne which is further south.
The City itself is laid out on a North-South grid, very compact and orderly - much like Melbourne. Though there are some nice heritage buildings here, and the buildings are generally very similar to Melbourne and Sydney, somehow the ambiance is different. After a while, it can get a bit boring.
The city centre.
On the fringes of the city, the scale changes dramatically. Many of the older buildings are very well preserved.
Adelaide is not really a city designed for tourists. In many ways it is a very functional city - a place to work and not much else. For holiday makers - I think you need to look elsewhere.
