Shanghai 2010 - Yu Yuan

Yu Yuan is one of the most popular tourists destinations in Shanghai, and understandably so. It is one of the most beautiful classical Chinese gardens in China, and also has a great collection of Classical Chinese buildings. The garden was built in the 15th century by a government official of the Ming Dynasty, and occupies an area of around 5 acres.

Besides the gardens, there are also lots of shops surrounding the gardens selling all sorts of tourist trinkets. This has now become the main attraction, and not so much the gardens.

The famous Nan Xiang Sio Loong Bao Restaurant is here, though be prepared to wait in line if you want to get a taste. The take-out service is always overwhelmed with people and can take longer then 1 hour. If you can’t wait, head to the 1st or 2nd floor for a sit down meal, but there is a minimum charge for the privilege. Remember – the higher you go the more expensive it gets !

To me Yu Yuan is a bit kitschy, touristy and overcrowded with tourist traps. However it is still a must-visit for your first time in Shanghai as it is a lot of fun. If you want to visit the gardens go earlier as some parts close as early as 5.30 p.m. The shops close later around 9.00 p.m.

Nice post! Reminds me of my visit there a couple of years ago. Yes, very touristy, but very interesting none the less. I went to Nan Xiang Dio Long Bao too...LOL..a bit overrated, but it's one of those things you have to try! It was fun drink soup in a steamed bun with a straw!

Hi Alice. Yes I definitely recommend a visit for first-timers to Shanghai. And Nan Xiang Sio Loong Bao are very nice, but probably not as nice as those from Ding Tai Fung.

China has some of the world's major history. Just makes you wonder about the skills of the craftsmen those days.
