Vienna 2016 - Hundertwasserhaus

Friedensreich Hundertwasser was a very unusual Austrian artist and architect who was opposed to the straight line and any standardization in art and architecture. He wanted to create buildings that are organic and closer to nature. His most famous work is the Hundertwasserhaus which has become an iconic landmark in Vienna - and also a big tourist attraction.

The building is actually an apartment complex. What makes it different is the interesting and creative facade with lots of whimsical designs and details - such as irregular windows, balconies and columns - giving each apartment a unique external expression. The apartments are also painted in different colours - creating a tapestry-like effect.
