Singapore 2011 - Mandarin Orchard Hotel

Mandarin Orchard has been one of the leading hotels in Singapore as far as I can remember. I can still recall a trip which my parents made to Singapore in the 70s to attend a wedding, and after they came back they were raving about the hotel being one of the best they have ever stayed in. Since then I have stayed in the hotel several times, and find it quite average in terms of design but very good in terms of service. And the convenience of the location is unbeatable, being right in the centre of Orchard Road.

The podium level of the hotel has since been completely renovated, and it is now branded as Mandarin Gallery and targeted at the high-end crowd. Jones the Grocer has set up an outpost there, and there is also Ippudo Ramen, Imperial Peking Duck Restaurant, and Wild Honey - a wildly popular all-day breakfast cafe.

The lobby reception is on Level 5. The strange thing is they have decided to keep it completely free of furniture, so you don’t even have a place to sit while waiting for check-in or waiting for somebody.

The rooms have been refurbished but not changed much. Furniture is quite basic and looks a bit dated. The size of the room is however very big compared to many newer hotels.

I choose Mandarin Orchard mainly for 2 things - the location and the breakfast. The breakfast is one of the best in town - with lots of selections and cooking stations usually found during dinner service. It's a great way to start your day when you're on holiday.
