Rome 2013 - The Pantheon

We had booked a hotel right opposite The Pantheon in the centre of Rome, so naturally, The Pantheon was the first sight we saw. We could see the historic monument from our hotel window so it was really nice.

The square in front of The Pantheon is one of the most central in Rome. It is always full of people all day and late into the night.

The Pantheon is more than 2,000 years old and one of the best-preserved ancient Roman buildings. It is often considered an architectural masterpiece due to its beauty and perfect proportions. The dome is still the largest un-reinforced concrete dome in the World. It fits a 43.3m perfect sphere inside.

The coffered dome is a beautiful architectural innovation. There is an oculus at the apex of the dome which lets in light and the rain. If you are wondering where the water goes, look carefully at the floor underneath the oculus.

The interior of the temple. It is hard to believe that this is thousands of years old.
