Johor Bahru 2012 - Chuan Yuan Restaurant
A client took us to a restaurant near Senai Airport speciliazing in fresh water carps. The restaurant is called Chuan Yuan, and they only have a few things on their menu. The shop is a typical "kopitiam" style whihc you see all overall Malaysia. You don't come for the decor - the food is the star in these outlets.
Of course the famous Fresh Water Carp was ordered. Normally I don't like fresh water fish as they can have an unpleasant "muddy" taste - but this was a big surprise. There was not hint of the "muddy" taste at all. The flesh was slightly firm and really sweet. The ample amount of ginger paste gave it some heat. It was very delicious.
The Deep Fried Pumpkin with Salted Egg Yolk was another very good dish. It's like very good tempura, but with the added saltiness of the salted egg yolk. Very addictive.
Another of their specialties - Deep Fried Pork. It tasted like Char Siew which has been coated with a very light batter and deep fried. The meat is still tender, and the batter gave it some crunchiness. Very good.
They also have this soup which every table seems to order - Bitter Gourd Soup with Pig's Intestines. I'm not normally a big fan of bitter gourd, but this was actually not too bad. Not much of a bitterness, but very refreshing.
If you are next in Johor Bahru, give this place a try. You won't be disappointed.
