Kuala Lumpur 2011 - Lunch at Din Tai Fung

The famous Din Tai Fung originally from Taiwan has opened 2 outlets in Malaysia - the first one at The Gardens Shopping Centre, and now the second one at The Pavilion. It is located at the top floor of the shopping centre which houses many other fine restaurants and eateries. Din Tai Fung has a reputation for maintaining their food quality everywhere they go, and the ones in Malaysia are no exception. The menu has been pared down to only their specialties - Sio Loong Pao and La Mien.

This is a place you want to come with a group of people, as the food is great for sharing. For a single diner, it is a bit more challenging as their minimum order for the Sio Loong Pao is 6 pieces, which is a bit too much if you are going to have other dishes. Since I was alone, I opted for the Truffle Sio Loong Pao - which came in 2 pieces at RM 6.00 each. It was great - sweet and savoury goodness, with the earthy aroma of the truffle.

I also ordered 2 appetizers - Japanese Cucumber Slices and their Signature Appetizer - a seaweed and tofu salad. Both were really great and a hallmark of why DTF is so revered by food lovers. The cucumber dish is crunchy, clean and with just a hint of chili oil and sweetness. The salad was a perfect balance of salty, tangy and spiciness.

The Mango and Prawn Roll was another great appetizer - crispy and light outer skin with fresh mango and crunchy prawns inside, the white mayonnaise sauce in the filling just managed to pull everything together.

For my main dish I had a La Mien with Pork Slices and Preserved Mustard Green. I like this dish for its light and subtle flavours, but some people may find it too bland.

For dessert I had Yam Pudding with Gingko Nuts. It wasn't as good as I had hoped, as the yam lacked the strong flavour that I liked.

The large team of chefs making Sio Loong Pao and other dim sums.

DTF lives up to its reputation as one of the great food experiences. The items are very simple, but expertly executed. Balance of flavours, texture and mouth feel are all an integral part of the DTF experience.

Hi Alice. Truffle Xiao Long Bao is one of their special items. It is more expensive though - RM 12.00 for 2.
