Singapore 2011 - Dinner at Bedrock Bar & Grill

Bedrock Bar & Grill is one of the most popular specialty restaurants in Singapore specializing in steaks. The name may conjure up memories of Fred Flintstone and Wilma, but make no mistake - this is no place for kids. The restaurant is located at the ground level of Pan Pacific Serviced Suites, next to 313@Sommerset on Orchard Road. The décor is casual and cozy, with lots of dark raw timber paneling, natural stone and leather sofas. The overall ambiance is decidedly up-market but friendly.

The steaks are mostly from US and Australia. You choose the cut you want - and as is the trend in most steakhouses nowadays, the sauces and sides are all extra. Personally I feel that when you are paying that much for a steak, these should be part of the deal.

We started with some oysters. They were really fresh and succulent.

I had a Wagyu Petit Tenderloin which was the special of the night. The marbling was just average, but it was perfectly grilled and very tender and flavourful. We had several side orders, including a Macaroni with Cheese. All good.

My Tenderloins came completely unadorned, served on a cast iron skillet.

Wilted greens in a creamy garlic sauce. Nice accompaniment to the meat.

My wife had the Wagyu Beef Burger. I had a taste and it was definitely above average, with a dark and rich taste and nice smokiness in the patty.

Eating at Bedrock is not a cheap affair, but they do know their stuff and you are guaranteed great food and service. The steaks start at SGD 69, sauces are SGD 4 each, and the sides range from SGD 5 for Balsamic Onion, SGD 18 for Pan Fried Foie Gras to SGD 24 for Wagyu Bone Marrow. It will easily set you back SGD 100 per person without wine. Luckily my brother and sis-in-law who work in Singapore earning the mighty Sing Dollars were treating.

100 Sing! Geez. They really *should* be throwing in the sides at that price.
