Salzburg 2016 - Salzburg Cathedral
Salzburg Cathedral is located next to the Residenplatz. This 17th Century Cathedral is Baroque in style. It was commissioned by Prince-Bishop Wolf Dietrich Raitenau who was a supported of Italian Baroque - who hired the famous Italian architect Vincenzo Scamozzi to prepare the design. Construction of the church was actually started by Wolf Dietrich's successor in 1614 - to a plan by another Italian architect Santino Solari who dramatically altered the original Scamozzi design.
Salzburg Cathedral is an impressive example of the Early Baroque - with beautiful sculptural friezes and richly decorated vaulted ceilings. The ornate domes are particularly beautiful.
