Salzburg 2016 - Mozartplatz

A smaller square next to the Residenzplatz is dedicated to Mozart, who was born around the corner in a house on Getreidegasse and used to live on the square with his wife Constanze in the 1770s. Mozart's statue is placed in the centre of the square.

At the time when the Mozart memorial was muted - Salzburg was not in the best of financial shape. Strapped for cash - the city leaders were distracted by other priorities. The memorial was completed with a large donation from King Ludwig I - who was an ardent Mozart fan. The memorial was finally unveiled in 1842 in the presence of Mozart's sons, but sadly Mozart's wife died earlier in the same year.
