Bali 2014 - Dinner at Casa Luna
Casa Luna is another old institution in Ubud. This restaurant - started by Aussie owner and chef Janet DeNeefe and her Balinese husband, has been around for more than 20 years. They specialize in Balinese and Western comfort food.
The restaurant is in a 2-storey Balinese-style pavilion right next to the main thoroughfare Jalan Raya Ubud. At the front is a small cafe area for cakes and coffee, and at the back, you can choose between the upper and lower dining sections. The lower section has a stage where live performances are held regularly.
Janet DeNeefe is recognized as an expert in Balinese cuisine, and she also runs cooking classes for visitors. The Indonesian food here is authentic and delicious. The Nasi Campur with mildly spiced chicken and satay lilit is miles ahead of the Ibu Mangku version.
The Indonesian salad (Gado-Gado) had a nice tangy sauce which is a bit like a light satay sauce.
The knock-out dish for us was the Lemongrass Fish Soup which had just the right balance of flavours and retained the natural sweetness of the fish.
With its own bakery, Casa Luna also does very good cakes. The Lime Tart was superb, and the Apple Crumble Slice was very good.
Casa Luna is one of those restaurants where the standards have been maintained over the years. Always a good place to stop by in Ubud.
