Milan 2013 - Castello Sforzesco

Castello Sforzesco is one of the most popular attractions in Milan. It was completed in 1368 by the first Duke of Milan - Galeazzo Il Visconti. In the 14th century the castle was razed by the public who declared the region a republic. At that time the republic was at war with Venice and a military leader Fransco Sforza was brought in to defend Milan. He did it successfully, but later on grabbed power and set himself up as the new Duke of Milan. The castle was rebuilt under his command. 

After you enter the impressive entrance tower, you will see a huge square flanked by towers at each corner.

As the castle was also used as a residence for the Dukes, the inner courtyards are more residential in scale and design.

At the back of the castle you can see some ruins of the earlier structures. There is also a large public park - Parco Sempione which was built in the 18th Century.

From Via Dante - a pedestrianized street just in front of Castello Sforzesco, you get the best views of the entrance tower.
