Penang 2011 - Penang Butterfly Farm
There are so many things to see in Penang, you are usually left with the unpleasant chore of having to decide which ones to delete from your list. Don’t make the mistake of leaving out the Penang Butterfly Farm. This is easily one of the best attractions in Penang - especially if you are traveling with kids. Imagine being surrounded by thousands of butterflies - and they are not shy to fly and swirl around your head. You can get really close and they won’t fly away. You can take lots of beautiful photos of butterflies that you would be hard pressed to achieve outside.
Located further up from the Tropical Spice Garden, the Butterfly Farm is in the Teluk Bahang area - after the tourist strip in Batu Feringghi. It is not very big - but butterflies are small creatures anyway. The main exhibit is a greenhouse within which the butterflies are free to roam. If you go at the right time, your kids will even get to release the baby butterflies that have just hatched from their cocoons.

Beautiful butterflies.
On your way out from the greenhouse - there is an exhibit of the less pretty creatures of the insect world - spiders, scorpions, bugs, etc. There is also a section showing different species of butterflies and their development stages. It can be very educational if you have the time. The shop is also surprisingly good. You can get framed up butterflies that will make very good gifts, and some nice souvenirs and even surprisingly good quality antiques.
