Penang 2011 - Hotel Penaga

In the past couple of years, Penang has seen a sudden boom in boutique hotels - and Hotel Penaga is one of the more prominent ones to have opened recently. It is developed and own by veteran Malaysian Architect Hijjas Kasturi and his wife. They took over a group of 2 and 3-storey shophouses on Hutton Lane and converted the place into a cosy and stylish venue. There is a small swimming pool - and even a spa.

The buildings have been beautifully restored - and the interiors are very nicely done.

Being outside of the Heritage Zone - they were able to take more liberties in the redevelopment. So it functions as a small full-service hotel with all the amenities you would expect of a modern establishment - complete with lifts. Hotel Penaga would definitely be a great place to stay if you want both a heritage ambiance and modern amenities. Rates are not cheap but still quite reasonable by International standards.
