In Penang you can really feel multi-culturalism at work. Within a stone's throw of each other you will find a Chinese temple, an Indian temple, a mosque, and a church - and all of them don't seem to mind the presence of their neighbours. Indian style buildings stand next to Chinese Style buildings without much complaint. This casual multi-culturalism is what gives Penang its unique colourful character.
