Malacca 2011 - Lunch at the Peranakan Restaurant
Peranakan Restaurant is at Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lok – or more commonly known as Heeren Street. It is a place where most tourists get taken for a taste of Peranakan Food in Malacca. I like to go there for the ambiance, and the food is not bad.
Going into Peranakan Restaurant is like walking into an old Nonya-Baba house. There is a large lobby at the front furnished with lots of antique furniture and artifacts. There are even pictures of the original owners. Once you pass that, there is a dining area in the covered courtyard which is the best place to be. Past that is another larger dining area.
I ordered a few dishes to go with rice. The Sambal Sotong (Spicy Squid) came first. The suid is nice and tender, and the sambal very appetizing.
Nonya Chap Chai (Mixed Vegetables).
Ayam Buah Keluak (spicy Chicken Stew). Buah Keluak is a seed from a tree native to South-East Asia. The paste inside the seed adds a complex and smokey flavour to the dish.
There are probably other places in Malacca which serve much better Nonya food, but I still can't resist coming back to this old establishment which has stood the test of time.
