Eating in Kuala Lumpur - Breakfast at The Spread

The Spread is the main coffeehouse at the Gardens Hotel, one of the latest 5 star hotels in Kuala Lumpur. The Gardens Hotel is located at The Gardens Shopping Centre - the premium sister to Midvalley Megamall.

The design of The Spread is quite generic. There is an open kitchen in the middle, with different cooking stations arranged in a circular pattern. The buffet spread wraps around the centre kitchen with a walkway in between. Overall design is modern contemporary, with white and yellow as the main colour accents.

The breakfast buffet is also quite generic, with the usual pastry section, cold cuts, Asian selections, fruits and cereals. For me the most tempting section was the cold cuts and some simple sauted dishes. So that was where I started. The sauted mushrooms were really good !

The Asian selections included noodles cooked to order, roti chanai, porridge, fried noodles, etc. These are usually quite disappointing, so I tend to avoid them.

One stand-out was the "Chi Kut Teh", which was supposed to be chicken bak kut teh. In truth it was more of a chicken broth with mushroom. It was really tasty, and I had 2 servings !

I had expected more from The Gardens, having heard so much hype about it. The reality is it is quite a standard 5 star hotel, with the same usual standard in the food department.
