Barcdelona 2014 - Parc Guell

Another of Gaudi's famous projects in Barcelona is Parc Guell. Park Guell was built for Eusebi Guell - one of the richest men in Spain at the time. He had the idea of developing an exclusive housing community with a large park - sort of a gated community for the rich. Unfortunately, the project did not take on - however, the park was completed to Gaudi's design. Today the once private park has been converted into a public park for all to enjoy. 

The centerpiece of the park is a large plaza that overlooks the city. Surrounding the plaza are curved benches beautifully decorated with broken mosaics design created by Josep Maria Jujol - Gaudi's little-known collaborator. 

There are two pavilions that flank the main entrance. The designs of these 2 buildings are very strange -  one looks like a gingerbread house, and the other like a very ornate chapel.

 A grand staircase leads up to the terrace and the gardens beyond.

From the higher parts of the garden, you can catch glimpses of the city - with the Sagrada Familia right on the axis.
